An Artist with a Knack for Latin Vernacular
Some contemporary artists “get” lettering—Robert Indiana and Ed Ruscha come to mind—but most do not.
A delightful exception is Carlos Garaicoa, who has a show going on now in Houston. Garaicoa is a Cuban who lives in Havana and Madrid, Spain. He is showing some big posters that appear to be old-fashioned architectural signs on ceramic tiles. But, according to the gallery, they are digital prints on tile, then assembled and laminated onto aluminum.
Energetic and ironic, Garaicoa has a political message you might miss if you don’t look closely, or if you don’t speak Spanish.
