How to Draw Type and Influence People

How to Draw Type and Influence People

Typefaces are powerful tools. Few know this more than designer and author Sarah Hyndman and her latest book exposes the secrets behind this power.

There are many, many books on typography out there. There are books that analyze and dissect historical typefaces, books that instruct on how to design different styles of typefaces, books for students on type’s role in graphic design, and even books that compile the latest trends in typography for designers and art directors. In fact, we’ve covered several of them just this week.

But there are very few books that open up this world of typography and share the secrets it has locked away with the rest of us.

Sarah Hyndman is a graphic designer, author, and public speaker, who has been preaching the “typographic gospel” for years. Her mission has been to change the way we think and talk about typography by demonstrating that it is fun and accessible for everybody. Her latest sermon comes in the form of a book: “How to Draw Type and Influence People.”

The book encourages users to think about the connotations of type and how to design their own effective type.

“How to Draw Type and Influence People” was created to share the power of typography with those of us who aren’t designers or art directors—those of us who find ourselves at the start of a journey through the world of personal expression and digital representation and are blissfully unaware of the communicative power we’re missing out on.

This is not your average book, however. It’s an interactive activity book that gives you seat at the table of better communication.

The book “teaches design empathy through creative exercises,” states Laurence King, who publishes the book; due out onMay 2, 2017. “Fun and interactive, the book encourages users to think about the connotations of type and how to design their own effective type.”

Sarah has a bit of a knack for bringing type to the people. She specializes in making the complex topic of type psychology accessible with originality and humor.

Sarah is perhaps most recognized from her popular TED Talk in 2014 on typography and expression, and her last book “Why Fonts Matter” established the modern case for fonts in today’s world. "How to Draw Type and Influence People” takes the ball from there and runs it further down the field and straight into practice for everyday people.

You can pick up a copy of the book, packed with over 200 illustrations of effective type and lettering, from Laurence King Publishers. It makes a perfect gift for those folks in your life who could use a little exposure and insight into the world typography, or for a little reminder of the power of type for yourself.
